A nursery which opened two years ago has been rated good in all areas following its first Ofsted inspection earlier this year.

Little Brook Nursery, in Blake Street, Accrington, was visited by inspectors in May, who were impressed by the environment on offer to children.

Inspectors noted how at the setting, which caters for 57 children aged zero to five-years-old, children lead their own play and feel safe, and are happy and enjoy their time there.

The report stated: “Children choose from the wide variety of activities on offer and staff help them embed and build on what they know and can do across all areas of learning.

“Babies are particularly well supported by calm staff who respond to their needs very well.

“Sensitive interactions help babies to rapidly build strong bonds with their key persons. Staff's thorough knowledge of babies' individual routines and likes ensures that they make a strong start to their learning.”

It was also noted how children get plenty of outdoor play time and also go on visits to the local park and supermarket to learn more about their community, and children behave well.

Children are helped to be independent and learn important life skills, such as portion control and learning about healthy eating, and taking care of their personal belongings.

The curriculum was praised for its broad scope to help children progress well, with maths and readings particular strengths, while staff were also praised for spotting gaps in children’s learning and addressing them

Inspectors noted safeguarding is effective and the seven members of staff – four of whom hold Level 3 qualifications – have a thorough understanding of policies and procedures.

Staff were also recognised for learning sign language so it can be taught to children and learn about a diverse range of festivals and backgrounds.

Work with parents was also praised, as “staff work hard to build and maintain relationships with parents” to ensure they are fully clued up on their child’s progress so learning can extend to the home too.

While overall the nursery was rated good, to become outstanding it was told it needs to look at how staff are deployed to make management of challenging behaviour more consistent.
