URGENT action must be taken to raise standards in Lancashire primary schools, according to a letter sent by Education Secretary Michael Gove to local MPs.
The Department for Education believes failing primary schools should be converted to academies to improve standards.
It said 32 primary schools in Lancashire had below floor standard results in 2011, 16 of which had been below the floor standard for at least two of the previous four years.
And six primary schools are currently in the Ofsted categories of special measures.
The department has refused to name the schools which are at risk.
A spokesman said: “Too many pupils in Lancashire are not getting the good start in education they need.
“Without urgent and decisive action they will continue to be failed.”
It said there were only four academies in Lancashire at present.
He said: “Standards in this hard core of primary schools must be addressed. We are clear that academies are the best way to drive school improvement.”
